A Drawing is both a representation of inner life and a mere picture. In the past, original sketches used to merge into the final work. Today, we look at them just as if we were listening to a beautiful single note within a symphony. Isolating this note is a way of giving it the credit for being unique particular.

Cleaned up!

Got a chance to cleanup my rough excitement sketch from a few days ago!

Tried out a second ball bounce. For some reason the Z tangent in the graph editor really threw me for a loop!



Had a few minutes to try out some more poses using Animation Mentor's Stu Rig





On these ones I tried to use directional lights to highlight the lines of action!

Today's inspiration provided by the great art styling of Mike DiMartino. I just started watching Avatar, the Last AirBender, and I instantly fell in love with it. It reminds me a lot in both the drawing style and the way they treat the story and the characters of Hayao Miyazaki. I can't wait to find the time to watch more of it. Thanks for the inspiration!

...for the 10 year olds...

Spent a good portion of the day trying to find a good deal on Maya and I'm continuously contemplating getting a Cintiq. I've been really motivated the last couple of days, and getting a decent amount of time to work on a lot of the projects I have going. At the end of the day I still feel like I should be getting more done. One day at a time!

Pirate a Day


Our little hero wondered to himself why he missed the landing and then he realized he had landed square on a rock pile. Seeing a good sized stone close by, our little hero swiftly grabbed it and hurled it towards his foe.


First off, I know most everyone has been talking about it today, but if you missed it, you have to check out the new trailer for Disney's Tangled.


It looks fantastic. Albeit, I wish that they could have kept with the original 2Dish idea, but I love the way they treated the 3d in this movie. It almost looks like a 3d oil painting. Simply Gorgeous!

Last night I put on Spirited Away, which I hadn't watched in quite some time. What a treasure. The first time I watched it, I really thought the story was a little too out there, but watching it again last night, which I think was my second time ever, I really felt like the movie was almost a Alice in Wonderland story for a new generation. I was so energized after watching it last night that I got up early this morning to watch all the behind the scenes featurettes. I wish I spoke Japanese just so I could really understand Miyazaki in his own words. Even through translation and subtitles you can really feel his energy and love for the medium. I hope to keep his ideal true that he had for this movie, in all my work. "For the people who used to be 10 years old, and the people who are going to be 10 years old." Thanks for the inspiration!

Productive Day!

I thought I was behind all day today. Then I realized how late it was so I started scanning the work I'd done, and well it turns out I drew a lot. Moving on to the the more animation side of my Preston Blair Study. Today was line of action in a sequence. Time permitting I'll turn these images into an animated gif tomorrow.

I'm still not sure where I want to go with that Minithology idea I had. So I thought I'd draw a Pegasus, that soon turned into this.

Tried out that exercise where you draw a random shape and turn it into something. Ended up doing a Robin Hood and Friar Tuck image.


When I was little I had a fascination with drawing Abraham Lincoln Beards and Hats on everything. So I'm working on a new character the Mustache Bandit. Who basically draws mustaches on everything and everyone.



Watched a bit of Pen and Teller's Bullshit with Rhys this evening and thought I'd try to be productive while I watched.

Picked up the Art of Miyazaki's Spirited Away. I could just stare at each page for hours. He has such a simple fluid style. I just love it. I've got to learn to watercolor some day.

Saxofox!

I have to learn to color! I've been listening a lot to color theory and man there really is so much to it. Gradients, subtleties, lighting and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Oh well, still have to focus on learning to really nail down my drawing to a T. On an inspiration note, I found Bill Pressing's blog Daily Peril last night and I just fell in love with his style, and my fiance, Rhys,bought me Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind Vol 1! Yay! New goals and influences to work with and from.
