I am not sure that all of my inspiration comes from somewhere other than my own burning desire to do art. For sure part of it comes from the people in my life. Part of it comes from what is occurring in my life at any given time. Part of it comes from what is occurring in the world at any given time.

We didn’t choose art. Art chose us. It was as if we were born to do art. My Ma told me we started to draw at 3 and just never stopped. We were obsessed with it.

Most artists live in their head. Their head is filled with ideas about art and not much else.

live your art every second of your life. Never settle with your art. Continuously push yourself to do what you are sure you cannot do. Once you have mastered what you are sure you cannot master go further.

Today's Inspiration:
My style comes from my years of animation, so all I could say is if you wanted to ape my style,
spend thirty years or so animating.  But basically a style comes from all the influences of your particular life,
all your enthusiasms, your inspirations.  So that should make everyone’s style unique.
And it’s very important to develop your own style.
In my own case, I try to keep in mind the simple directive:  Draw better!
I’m not at all sure that comes close to answering the question, but there it is.

For a pure literary quote, though, since it’s a hard time out there these days, this one comes to mind,
and maybe it’s apt:  “We are all of us in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” – Oscar Wilde

"The dictionary definition of "sincere" is free from pretense or deceit; proceeding from genuine feelings.

Some great advice on the importance of the subject from Ollie Johnston: "you have to make it sincere, so that the audience will believe everything they do, all their emotions. Ask yourself: 'what is the character thinking and why does he feel this way?'"

Sincerity is an elusive quality and hard to define, but very important to what we do. The films and characters that come from a real place and feel grounded and sincere will stand the test of time and be enjoyed by audiences for decades to come. Over the years there have always been snarky, insincere movies and they just don't touch audiences or live on in people's memories the way a really sincere story will. There's nothing wrong with those kind of movies, of course, but our goal in animation is usually to create stories that stand the test of time. And sincerity is key to accomplishing that goal."
